About this Species
This is a painting of sunflower stars, an endangered species of sea star that was once prevalent in BC’s waters but has been in decline since 2013 due to a wasting disease. This amazing species can measure up to one metre across, and is critical to the health of the kelp forest, because it controls green urchin populations and keeps them from overfeeding on the kelp. MERS is part of the research effort to study sea star wasting disease and how it is impacted by climate change.
