About this Painting

Title - “The Watchers”

Ravens hold a sacred role in mythology and in the biology of the forest floor. These important scavengers aid in the forest life cycle, along with forest decomposers such as fungi and invertebrates. Due to the action of bears, eagles and ravens, nitrogen in many coastal trees can be traced to salmon. The ravens perch on a nurse log surrounded by salal and huckleberry, against a backdrop of ancient cedars. Read the story behind the other 7 paintings in the forest floor series here.

This is a listing for the original. This is a fantasy painting of two ravens on a nurse log, part of the Forest Floor series.

Original painting is acrylic on canvas with gold metal leaf, 20x24" with 0.75” canvas depth.

This painting is signed in paint at the bottom right corner by the artist, and on the back with the artist’s custom aspen leaf stamp. The edges are painted to match, so you can hang it without a frame. Hanging hardware will be attached for shipping.

About this Species

Much artistic license was taken with the Forest Floor series, and composition often won out over biological correctness, However, here are a few of the species Kathryn chose to honour in this painting:

Raven

This highly intelligent bird in the Corvid family is common in the Pacific Northwest forests. An important forest detrivore, ravens are opportunistic foragers that will eat carrion, insects and berries. Ravens have a prominent role in the mythology of many different cultures, and are associated with wisdom and a connection with the spirit world.

Salal

This evergreen shrub has tough, shiny leaves and produces bright pink and white flowers and edible dark blue berries. Salal grows along the coast from northern California to Alaska.

Red Huckleberry

This evergreen shrub has small delicate rounded leaves, and produces bright red berries which are eaten by many forest species in the summer and fall.
